What Killed Jane Creba.

The day after Christmas in 2005, fifteen-year-old Jane Creba was fatally shot on one of the busiest streets in Toronto. Both police and journalists reported the death as one of an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire of rival gangs. There was much more to the story.

In a city whose pride in its diversity was about to be shaken as gun violence fears stirred up racial stereotypes, there was one more fact about Jane Creba that press coverage couldn’t seem to let go: she was white.

Each chapter is framed by the reasons it happened. Poverty. Race. Drug addictions. And a desire to get out of the mess by becoming an artist.

Cells inside the Old Don Jail: Photo depicts the cells where three men would be housed in a cell intended for one.

The basement of the Don where inmates were sent for solitary confinement. In most prisons now, solitary confinement means inmates do not have windows that would allow them to interact with anyone.

The view looking out of a solitary confinement cell. Guards can close the window at any time. Walls are often covered in feces and urine because inmates act out feelings of frustration and seclusion.
